I suppose not much but with it in the exif data it can be used
anywhere not just when I uploaded it to flickr. So if I keep the
image on my pc the location is stored there as well.
I actually find nokia app is not what I want at all. having it
in the EXIF data is fine, but the main place I want my photos on
the map is flickr and this is not supported here. The ONE image I
was successful at tagging did not have any associated map data.
boo
On another note, just how is Shozu getting the geodata
that it attaches to the photos? Is there geodata attached to the
photos, just not in EXIF-format? Or does Shozu look at the gps-data
and match the time a photo was taken to the coordinates logged for
that specific time?
"There's a smaller app called GPS Data on the N95 that you can
use to keep an eye on how the GPS is doing.
I'll leave manny to explain how the GPS system works, as he
knows the details better than I do."
Manny (Client Architect) says:
"Hi
The GPS feature on ShoZu tries to balance between automated
geotagging of photos and battery preservation leaving ( (so not
leaving GPS hardware running to long). ShoZu will attempt to get a
GPS lock automatically when a photo is taken, it will try for about
10 minutes (this is how long the N95 can take to get a satellite
lock), after that it gives up, once a connection is made the
connection is left open for 5 minutes after the last photo was
taken, this is so if someone is taking multiple photos it doesn't
have to restart the GPS hardware each time, however if another
application has the GPS hardware up and running ShoZu will share
this connection instead. We don't cache the last know coordinate
simple because we don't know how how far away from the last know
position you were, even in a short time you can be miles away from
the last known co-ordinate.
re-upload works ... seems it only reads the data as the photo
enters the flickr system. Seems that it was very accurate as well -
http://flickr.com/photos/atmasphere/2228...
I was at the Pleasantville train station on my way home...
I found I was pretty low on battery last night after leaving the
tagger running ... anyone else? Seems like it's working harder than
shozu, though may be more accurate (if it connects). I only see it
working when you snap - no 10 min window.
Hmm having tried georss in Google maps I think I prefer the
Flickr map.
Even though the actual map isn't as good as Google's the photos are
presented better.
in all fairness flickr had plenty of issues like this before
yahoo came along. Really the only change since yahoo was
integrating logins, beyond that I haven't seen much difference.
I always found Shozu touch and go when it came to tagging and
use Locr http://www.locr.com/.
This tags brilliantly, looks for the tag for 5 mins on the N95 and
offers the option of using the last GPS location. Also will show
Geotagged photos nearby. I still upload with Shozu though because
then I can upload to Flickr rather than the Locr site and subscribe
to mates Flickr screens
I'll admit the Nokia solution is the answer for me - never
managed to get Shozu to work properly on my N95 - it killed the
video function whenever I had it installed.

Same here, nobody has given me a good reason to move away from Shozu yet

In fact the only good thing about Nokia Location Tagger is that it's made me realise that I can parse my georss feed from Flickr through Google Maps.

right but I don't want my location in the tags, this embeds it into the exif of the image.
7 months, 1 week ago by krazykritter.
But don't you need to open Nokia Maps and or Nokia Sports Tracker first to get a GPS lock?
shaking head - I just don't get it. What's the difference between the info being in the tags and being in the EXIF?
I mean - that's not much of a difference, is it?

So Nokia Location Tagger embeds geodata in the EXIF? Cool!
@whatleydude: There's a couple of reasons. One being that you're then free to upload whichever way you would want and still get them geotagged.

be nice if it did both ... EXIF will work on your desktop and google earth

@atmashpere I missed this too, but you have to enable flickr to read the data from the image in your account settings.

@lemonad shozu uses gps and add it as tags, like a description.

@krazykritter: if that's the case then I will possibly like this as well... checking my settings now

update my settings ... but it does not work retroactively. have to try uploading that pic again

@whatleydude: Thanks so much! I think that explains exactly what I wanted to know. Cool!

@atmasphere - I went through all this yesterday afternoon on my own trying to parse my georss feed through google maps.
First enable the geotags in your flickr privacy settings and then you have to tell flickr to apply that setting retrospectively.
The latter takes a while to 'crunch the data' but it worked a treat for me...

@lemonad - Glad to be of assistance!

where do you tell flickr to update retroactively
7 months, 1 week ago by atmasphere.
Is it here? http://flickr.com/account/geo/import/
7 months, 1 week ago by whatleydude.
flickr would be as accurate as the gps data

thanks @whatleydude that's what I needed also

@atmashpere I haven't used it enough yet, but I'll test it more and find out.
7 months, 1 week ago by krazykritter.
@atmasphere - check my map link up there ^ - I was really impressed with the accuracy of the pics I took to be honest. All with ShoZu.
@KrazyKritter - once again, glad to help! Took me ages to work it all out yesterday - happy to share the wealth!

I wonder if this will soon work for video ... no EXIF to tag, but could be very cool if there was a way
7 months, 1 week ago by atmasphere.
Guess that's where shozu would excel since it uses tags instead. I still prefer exif method as it becomes a part of the image data.

Have you guys tried taking the georss feed and putting it through googlemaps yet?
Oh it's good...
7 months, 1 week ago by whatleydude.
No, because flickr's interface is terrible and it's never immediately obvious where to look for such things!
7 months, 1 week ago by danlane.
Go to your main photo page, at the bottom where the RSS options are.. it's there!
At the bottom of this page for me.
Take that and stick it in the search box of google maps.
7 months, 1 week ago by whatleydude.
Ahhh I was looking at my map page... because, y'know... logic.
7 months, 1 week ago by danlane.
Logic + Flickr (A Yahoo Company).
You are Dan Lane right?
7 months, 1 week ago by whatleydude.
I must have assumed that the fuckwittery was reserved for Yahoo Go but it appears to have crept over to Flickr too :(
7 months, 1 week ago by danlane.
Maybe it's contagious.
Best not use Yahoo Go ever again.

The manual for the Symbian software for Locr can be found here http://www.locr.com/clients/manual/locrG... . I presume that the geotag info is put into the Exif info, but I'm not an expert with this. The co-ordinates are recorded on my Flickr photos though. http://www.flickr.com/photos/waveydavey0...

@krazykritter, one of the big differences I noticed in the change was the swap out of Google Maps for Yahoo Maps... that's one of my only complaints.
