So let me get this straight... Macs should just 'work' right? Then why the hell won't this one connect dammit....

They should just work. The Apple stores are usually happy to help over the phone if they can. Call your local store.

No no - I'm sure it works... but where's the 'connect to my wireless internet' button?

Airport icon (radar) on menu bar.

At the top there is a menu bar. There should be a wireless icon there.

It's the little grey (or black if connected) fan

... or empty if airport is off.

Or at the bottom in the menu there there should be a white square that when u mouse over it it should say settings or something of the sort.

    AH HA!

Found it using 'Finder' to find 'Airport'

@whatleydude - which OS are you using? Tiger or Leopard (Apple->About This Mac)

If the AirPort icon is not there (top menu bar on right hand side): Apple > System Preferences > Network > AirPort > check box "Show AirPort status on menu bar".

    I got OS X

I've got the airport running and I've tapped in the right WEP key and stuff but apparently 'There was an error joining the AirPort network "BTHomeHub-598D"

    Arse.

Sorry mate that's beyond me. Try Googling the error.

    OS X what? 10.4. = Tiger and 10.5. = Leopard.

Did you try different WEPs (there is three to choose)?

It can get a bit confused between 64bit/128bit and Ascii/Hex sometimes. It seems to cope better with WPA keys.

Sometimes, you have to tell the system that the WEP key is hexadecial (if it's the case!) by adding 0x at the beginning of the key (zero x +26 chars for a 128 bits key, or 10 chars for 64 bits).

3 months, 3 weeks ago by sachaqs.

  • whatleydude

So lets say my normal WEP key (which incidentally just works with every other sodding wireless device in my house) is ten characters long.. Letters and numbers.

What do I have to do?

3 months, 3 weeks ago by whatleydude.

  • sachaqs

Have you tried different security options using the dropdown menu? ("WEP 40/128-bit hex" instead of "WEP password")

  • edythemighty

You should be running WPA anyway ;P

this is similar to the problem i had with my ipod touch. Wep worked fine for every device i own apart from the touch, it just would not connect. After advice from someone on here i changed to wpa and it worked. Granted wpa is better but apple products should still work with wep, all other manufacturers products do.

  • sachaqs

btw, MAC filtering isn't enabled on your router, right?

3 months, 3 weeks ago by sachaqs.

  • whatleydude

@sachaqs - dude, you rule. Just on my way home, will try that when I get in. Nice one.

  • edythemighty

    That he does

  • phoneboy

Using WEP is like obscuring English speech with piglatin.

3 months, 3 weeks ago by phoneboy.

  • map

I'm using WEP and it works perfectly - with AirPort base station.

3 months, 3 weeks ago by map.

  • sachaqs

@map: yes it does for me too, with ABS or any other router! The only issue with WEP is it's really weak (as pointed by @phoneboy, if I understand correctly ;).
